For this, our second production, we collaborated with two renowned and award-winning artists, writer/director Lee Beagley and designer/film maker Paul Kondras.

Do you remember what you were doing the day Elvis died?

Harry Smith Jones doesn’t, in fact he doesn’t remember much at all. On 16th August 1977, he awoke in the branches of a tree with no recollection of who he was or how he got there. This is the tragic-comic tale of Harry’s quest to find an identity as he moves into a new flat and opens the door to an extraordinary world of ghosts, squirrels and an unhealthy obsession with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

This darkly comic piece looks at memory and the role it plays in shaping our personal and cultural identity. Magical comedy, eccentric characterisation, an evocative soundtrack and an array of Elvis numbers sung live combine to make Me & The King a visually striking theatrical experience.

Me & The King toured the North West and Yorkshire in 2005 and nationally in 2006. Read review here.

In 2002, Motion Loco developed an alternative Christmas show for the Royal Exchange Theatre studio based on fictional magicomedy double act, The Amazing Syd Selby and Fanny. The result was Syd and Fanny’s Christmas Turkey.

“A timeless theatrical exploration of life and death; a bittersweet examination of a life of under-achievement” (Bolton Evening News). In this unique, and at times surreal, blend of songs, magic and comedy, disillusioned illusionists, Syd and Fanny, relive their glory days in the twilight years of their lives, serving up old favourites such as The Cabinet of Doom and Levitating Fanny plus surprise special guests. During the finale, an elaborate escapology routine takes a surprisingly surreal turn for the worse leading to an unexpectedly moving end to the evening.

After its success at The Royal Exchange Theatre, Syd and Fanny’s Christmas Turkey toured nationally to critical acclaim and sell-out audiences in 2003 and 2004. The old timers are currently enjoying retirement in their caravan near Morecombe but aren’t ruling out the possibility of a Comeback Special.
